Windows Media Player Distribution and SDK Agreements

  • WM Player 10 Distribution Agreement for Windows XP and above
  • WM Player 9S Distribution Agreement for Windows XP through Windows 98 SE
  • WM Player 9S Distribution Agreement for Macintosh
  • WM Player v7 Distribution Agreement for Macintosh
  • WM Encoder 9S Distribution Agreement for Windows

Steps to obtain a Windows Media SDK License:

Estimated Microsoft response times do not include time for customer to complete steps 1, 3, 4, 7.

  1. Request license using the Windows Media Licensing Form   and select appropriate agreement from drop down menu
  2. wmla@microsoft.com sends License Agreement and instructions to license requestor (1 business day)
  3. Customer prints 2 originals, completes, signs and returns license via mail courier to DMD Licensing
  4. Customer sends Class 3 certificate to wmla@microsoft.com if needed
  5. Microsoft reviews and countersigns agreement (4 days)
  6. Microsoft sends email to licensee, advising that their agreement has been executed, that one original will be mailed to them for their records, and electronically pointing them to their deliverables (i.e. SDK, DRM Certificates, Logo Art) as applicable. Email includes pointers to compliance and robustness rules as applicable. Passwords to access deliverables are sent in a separate email. (2 days)
  7. (optional/if applicable) Licensee signs and returns Certificate Request Exhibit
  8. Microsoft generates certificates and returns to licensee via email (2 days)

Windows Media Components Agreements

Select the WM Components Application to initiate licensing for either of the following agreements; 

  • WM Format Component Interim Agreement (For example: For IC manufacturers porting Windows Media Audio to their chipset.)
  • WM Format Component Final Agreement (For example: For OEMs distributing a ported Windows Media Video codec in a consumer electronics device, or for an ISV distributing a Windows Media Audio codec for a non-Windows desktop.) This is the agreement to license PDDRM.

Windows Media DRM 10 for Devices Agreements

Select the WM Components Application to initiate licensing for either of the following agreements; 

  • Windows Media DRM 10 Interim Agreement (for porting Portable and Network Devices)
  • Windows Media DRM 10 Final Agreement (for distribution of Portable and Network Devices)

Steps to obtain Windows Media Components or WMDRM 10 for Devices Licenses:

Estimated Microsoft response times do not include time for customer to complete steps 1, 3, 5, 8, 11.

  1. Request license using the Windows Media Licensing Form   and select appropriate application from drop down menu
  2. wmla@microsoft.com sends application and instructions to license requestor (1 business day)
  3. Customer completes and returns application electronically
  4. WMLA drafts requested license(s) and if complete, sends draft .pdf agreement to customer via email for review (3 days)
  5. Customer reviews and approves draft
  6. Draft license submitted to MS approval process (6 days)
  7. Approved license sent to customer via email for signature
  8. Customer prints 2 originals, completes, signs and returns license via mail courier to DMD Licensing
  9. Microsoft reviews and countersigns agreement (4-7 days depending on agreement type)
  10. Microsoft sends email to licensee, advising that the agreement has been executed, and that one original will be mailed for their records. Email includes certificate generation kit and pointers to compliance and robustness rules as applicable. (2 days)
    1. For WM Components, this email will point to deliverables (i.e. Porting Kit). Passwords to access deliverables will be sent in a separate email.
    2. For WMDRM 10 for Devices, deliverables will be sent after invoicing and payment are complete
  11. Licensee completes and returns certificate requests as needed (optional)
  12. For WMDRM 10 for Devices; Microsoft Invoices (3 days)
  13. For WMDRM 10 for Devices; upon confirmation of payment, we will release the code and/or the certificate(s), as applicable.
  14. Microsoft generates certificates and returns to licensee via email (up to 2 weeks)
