Overview of Steps for Companies Requesting License Agreements


Important Note!  Microsoft only executes Windows Media and PlayReady License Agreements for technology distribution and/or product development with a “Company” (which may be a sole proprietorship, corporation, educational institution, or a non-profit).  To obtain an executable copy of any of these agreements, submit a
License Request Form.

Determine which license agreements have Deliverable Fees and/or Royalties

Steps for License Agreements which have Deliverable Fees and/or Royalties

1.     Request license and select appropriate agreement from drop down menu: https://wmlicense.smdisp.net/licenserequest-04/licenserequest.aspx  

2.     wmla@microsoft.com sends application and instructions to license requestor (3 business days)   

3.     Customer completes and returns application electronically

4.     If application is complete, WMLA drafts requested license(s), sends draft .pdf agreement to customer via email for review (3 business days)

5.     Customer reviews and approves draft

6.     Approved draft submitted for MS approval process (6-10 business days)

7.     Approved license sent to customer via email for signature

8.     Customer prints 2 originals, completes, signs and returns license via mail courier to MSLI Licensing, G.P. in Reno, NV. USA

9.     Microsoft reviews and countersigns agreement (4-7 business days depending on agreement type)

10.  Microsoft sends email to customer, advising that the agreement has been executed, and that one original will be mailed for their records. Email includes certificate generation kit and pointers to compliance and robustness rules as applicable (5 business days)

11.  Any deliverables associated to agreement will be sent after invoicing and payment are complete

12.  Microsoft invoices customer for deliverable fees or license fees (3 business days)

13.  Licensee completes and returns certificate requests as needed (optional)

14.  Code will not be released prior to payment.  Upon confirmation of payment, WMLA will release the code and/or the certificate(s), as applicable.

15.  Microsoft generates certificates and returns to customer via email (up to 10 business days)

Estimated Microsoft response times do not include time for customer to complete steps 1, 3, 5, 8, 11, 13.  Average total time is a full month for completion.  Start early!

Steps for License Agreements which have no Deliverable Fees and/or Royalties

1.     Request license and select appropriate agreement from drop down menu: https://wmlicense.smdisp.net/licenserequest-04/licenserequest.aspx  

2.     wmla@microsoft.com sends License Agreement and instructions to license requestor (3 business days)   

3.     Customer sends Class 3 certificate, (OCX file) to wmla@microsoft.com if needed: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/licensing/licensing.aspx  

4.     Customer prints 2 originals, completes, signs and returns license via mail courier to WMLA Licensing in Redmond, WA. USA

5.     Microsoft reviews and countersigns agreement (4 business days)

6.     Microsoft sends email to customer, advising that their agreement has been executed, that one original will be mailed to them for their records, and electronically pointing them to their deliverables (i.e. SDK, DRM Certificates, Logo Art) as applicable. Email includes pointers to compliance and robustness rules as applicable. Passwords to access deliverables are sent in a separate email. (2 business days)

7.     (optional/if applicable) Customer signs and returns Certificate Request Exhibit

8.     Microsoft generates certificates and returns to customer via email (10 business days)

Estimated Microsoft response times do not include time for customer to complete steps 1, 3, 4, 7.  Average total time is two full weeks for completion.  Start early!
